Malaria can be beaten. Proof of this can be found in the fact that across the Asia Pacific region, millions of people who would have died from the disease are living healthy, productive lives. Still, malaria remains a serious threat to lives and livelihoods. Endemic in 22 countries across Asia, it is contracted by an estimated 32 million people annually and kills 47,000 of them.
A recent Reuters news article highlighted the challenges and opportunities of health reform in Asia. The article highlights the situation of a family whose premature infant daughter dies as a result of being unable to obtain infant ICU services in Jakarta, Indonesia.
The ADB Health Community of Practice had an opportunity to contribute to the regional post-2015 social development agenda last week. Susann Roth, a Senior Social Development Specialist colleague in the Regional Sustainable Development Department, presented the initial outcomes from the ADB-UNDP-UNESCAP-sponsored Asia and the Pacific consultations.
