Long's current research topics include financial development, SME development, international trade, structural change and economic growth. Before joining the ADB Institute, he had worked as an economist at the Central Institute for Economic Management, Vietnam’s leading think-tank, for more than 10 years. Long received his PhD from the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies in Tokyo (Japan).
