In Afghanistan, a young girl sitting in front of a kerosene lamp dreams of a magic box that can bring light so she can read, a fan to cool her room, a TV to educate and entertain, USB ports to charge devices, and a refrigerator to store food for the family.

We call it “electricity in a box.”

It’s a comprehensive electricity solution that packages in three disruptive energy technologies: solar power, super efficient appliances, and lithium-ion batteries that power electric cars.

Today we have the technology. We have the capability to help this Afghan girl. It is now possible for her to leapfrog today’s unreliable grid electricity from yesterday’s kerosene to tomorrow’s self-generated solar power.

This is a solution to climate change. Technology will enable all of us to dream of a better future. Imagination keeps us alive.

Please watch the video above if you want to learn more about what we are doing to support the “electricity in a box” project for off-grid communities across ADB developing member countries in Central and West Asia.
